The Union Fire Protection District is currently accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/EMT, both part-time and full-time opportunities are available. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, have a valid driver’s license, high school diploma or its equivalent and must be 18 years of age at the time of application. Firefighter/EMT applicants must possess current Kentucky EMT, current CPR card, minimum of a Kentucky 115 hour firefighter certification, and a valid CPAT card (exempt from CPAT requirement if employed as a full-time firefighter in Kentucky within the one year). 

Lateral salary & additional vacation time based on previous experience

Starting Salary:

Full-Time Firefighter/EMT: $55,660 - $62,637 plus $4,300 state incentive when eligible

Part-Time Firefighter/EMT: $18.36/hr

Job Description

DEFINITION: 

The Firefighter/EMT serves as a team member to carry out fire suppression and technical rescue, basic life support medical emergency response, fire prevention and hazardous material emergency response activities. The Firefighter/EMT also performs various maintenance activities on fire equipment and fire station facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: 

• Receives general direction from a Captain, Lieutenant, or Sergeant. 
• Reports directly to a Captain, Lieutenant, or Sergeant.
• Exercises direct and indirect supervision of probationary Firefighter/EMT’s.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to the following: 

• Respond to emergency and non -emergency situations such as (but not limited to); fires, vehicle crashes, water accidents, bomb threats, hazardous materials incidents, severe weather, medical emergencies.
• Perform firefighting techniques including, but not limited to; extinguishing, ventilation, rescue, salvage, overhaul and forcible entry.
• Move injured, sick or unconscious away from danger and provide pre-hospital emergency medical care.
• Drive appropriate firefighting equipment and/or motor vehicles to emergency and nonemergency scenes, as directed, and in a safe manner.
• Monitor radio and other communication devices to receive assigned runs.
• Attend, participate in and/or lead presentations to civic, school, neighborhood, industrial or business organizations. Topics include but are not limited to: fire prevention, fire station tours, safety, or other public training exercises as directed.
• Attend and participate in various educational, technical, and other training exercises as directed by the Chief and/or designee which could include but not limited to extrication, ice water rescue, rope rescue, and confined space.
• Clean and maintain all equipment, buildings, and grounds; perform regular maintenance and repair on equipment, buildings, grounds as directed, to ensure proper function and upkeep of all Fire department equipment, grounds, buildings; maintain uniforms to standard.
• Provide assistance, as directed, to other departments within the district or to mutual aid organizations.
• Complete all necessary forms, reports, data uploads in a neat, orderly, accurate, and timely manner as required by Fire Chief, local, state and/or federal agencies. Provide oral reports, as necessary, to appropriate personnel.
• Maintain the highest ethical and moral standards and perform within the parameters of the law as set forth by the Union Fire Protection District as your employer.
• On occasion, relieve an officer of higher rank as directed and assume all the responsibilities of that position.
• Respond to mandatory overtime requirements.

KNOWLEDGE OF: 

• BLS procedures for evaluation and treatment of patients during various medical emergencies.  
• Techniques on safe and proper use of tools and equipment associated with mechanical and maintenance work.  
• Basic principles relating to flammable and combustible materials.  
• Mechanical principles such as leverage, force, acceleration, friction, etc. English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.  
• Math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division utilizing both whole numbers and decimals. Local geography, including the location of water mains, hydrants, and major target hazards, fuel models, and traffic hazards of the Department.  
• Principles of hydraulics, friction loss, and water supply.
• Technical rescue disciplines as assigned by the Fire Chief.
• Report writing and form procedures.

 ABILITY TO: 

• Learn firefighting methods and techniques, the basic operation and mechanics of firefighting equipment, location of hydrants, mains, major traffic and fire hazards. 
• Learn to drive apparatus with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and Department regulations.
• Learn and maintain proficiency in BLS and/or ALS EMS practices and techniques. 
• Analyze fire and driving situations and to adopt effective courses of actions. Think and act quickly in emergencies. 
• Understand and carry out verbal and written directions. 
• Maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 
• Work irregular or protracted hours and to respond to call-backs. 
• Perform heavy and hazardous physical labor for extended periods. 
• Meet and maintain physical standards. 
• Work well with others as a team. 
• Analyze problems quickly and take appropriate action under pressure. 
• Effectively interact with various individuals with tact and courtesy.
• Effectively and clearly communicate in both verbal and written formats. 
• Work under conditions of zero visibility and temperature variations with various equipment and tools. 
• Read and interpret maps, diagrams, floor plans and geometric figures. 
• Calculate hydraulic engineering problems under emergency conditions.
• Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities that may include performing life-threatening firefighting activities in an emergency situation; running, walking, crouching or crawling during emergency operations; moving equipment and injured/ deceased persons; climbing stairs/ladders; performing lifesaving and rescue procedures; walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time; operating assigned equipment and vehicles. 
• Submit and pass a background investigation

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS 

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

• KY Fire Commission 400-hour Firefighter Certification
• IFSAC Firefighter I & II 
• IFSAC Driver Operator, Pumper, Aerial, Mobile Water Supply  
• Accompanying Technical rescue certifications and knowledge       
• KY Certified EMT, with accompanying certifications.
• Valid CPAT card or exemption at time of appointment.
• Valid KY Drivers license

Must be able to perform all essential functions of the position
